5 Things to Consider About the Gig Economy - Workology

5 Things to Consider About the Gig Economy - Workology 5 Things to Consider About the Gig Economy Something Ive been thinking about a lot lately is what role HR will have in organizations that are increasingly reliant on contingent workers. HR itself is difficult to automate, like most things that involve complex human interactions and constantly shifting  needs, and as proven by disasters like Zenefits, its difficult to outsource, save in very small businesses. There will be a need for HR, or an HR-like department, so long as there are actual human resources people  in the workforce. But HR typically only has responsibility for full and part time workers, having little contact with contractors, whose personnel issues are more commonly sorted out by their agency, if they have one, their direct supervisor or even  bookkeeping, where relevant. But that leaves a grey space doesnt it? Particularly for companies that rely on contingent workers that come and go, either seasonally or at need. HR maintains a talent network consisting of current, former and potential employees, keeping in touch with them, developing relationships over time and even learning from them but whos doing that for the contractors who are so important to so many organizations? Thats why today I thought for this Fridays link roundup wed consider the gig economy / contingent workforce and the impact its having on more traditional labour. 5 Things to Consider About the Gig Economy 90% of Companies Use Contingent Labor and Plan to Increase Spending Over the Next Year A new study of how companies are using contingent labour shows that more and more are relying on it for strategic and even core business needs. According to the Contingent Workforce Survey, Almost three-quarters of organizations say their contingent workforce is effective or very effective, and more than 70% believe the use of contingent labor is strategic to specific business functions or to the business as a whole. Overall, about half of organizations plan to increase spending on contingent labor over the next year including 60% of small organizations (under 1,000 employees), 38% of mid-size companies (1,000-9,999 employees), and 44% of large employers (10,000+). Of course the surveyors are invested in speaking with organizations that are already involved with the contingent workforce, so these results should be considered against other surveys but it does seem to be the case that reliance on contingent labour is growing, and so is confidence in it. NYCs Freelance Isnt Free Act Goes Into Effect Today Earlier this month New York City became the first in the USA to launch legal protections specifically for freelancers. The law compels employers to pay freelancers as agreed and within 30 days of the works completion, at penalty of a fine. It also creates some protections for freelancers from employer retaliation. Anyone whos done freelance work knows how important this act is freelancers can sometimes spend months trying to get paid for work done in good faith, and those working long contracts experience many of the pitfalls of regular employment with few of the perks. One of the key changes the law makes is that [w]ithin two years of being stiffed, a freelancer can now file a complaint with the citys Office of Labor Standards, within the Department of Consumer Affairs. The office director will then draft a certified letter to the employer within 20 days, explaining how the freelancers contract was allegedly breached. Best case scenario, the law will scare employers straight before a freelancer has to resort to claims court. Why ‘Gig Health’ Matters One growing concern about  contingent workers is regarding their health. Contingent workers tend to have higher levels of stress and poorer health overall even some of the higher paid contingent workers. This is the same kind of stress-related health issue that weve seen in other parts of the workforce, where employees are being pushed to their limits. Labour organizations and government bodies in the US and elsewhere are paying more and more attention to the issue though so far, few countries have proposed substantive legislation in this area. But simply considering the health of contract workers should be a priority for all companies. No one should be in the business of chewing and spitting out their workers simply because it saves them a few coins. How to Avoid Regulatory Fire in the Gig Economy Worker classification! Ugh, so boring. But so important. Worker misclassification has led to some big lawsuits in the past and its been a consistent problem in startups with inexperienced founders and managers. Understanding the differences between full, part time and contingent workers, both legal and practically, is essentially to avoiding a big legal blowup. But its also something worth auditing regularly, in order to understand the real labour needs of your business are you over-relying on contingent workers when dedicated full or part time workers might actually get you better results? Inexperienced or cheap managers sometimes make these decisions based on expense, as in minimizing benefits and liabilities, but how you classify your workforce and what its makeup should be (full, part time, contingent) is much more complicated than that. The Rise of the Blended Workforce When we talk about the blended workforce we mean that increasingly a companys workforce is comprised of a combination of full and part time employees as well as contractors. This creates certain complications for departments that are used to dealing with workers in one standard way, such as IT, HR and accounting. But more importantly, it also requires that HR and senior management reexamine their people strategy, that it rethink how it interacts with its talent network, and what it should expect from each segment of the workforce. This piece  by recruiting consultant,  Jamie Grant, looks at ways to change your strategy without compromising your values.

In the course of recent years, through training a portion of the world's best businesspeople and with my profound investigation of the inner mind, I reframed an incredible strategy from my guide Dr. Coletta Long, a main pioneer in the field of relapse, to help significantly more individuals accomplish the opportunity from stress and anxiety. It's known as the Emotional Reset Method. Also, it's so straightforward (sort of lik e the Mel Robbins 5-second strategy, which I love). So… what is it?The Emotional Reset Method (ERM) is a five-advance procedure to distinguish, name, and discharge that feeling or impression of stress/uneasiness/torment/stress that you don't need in your body any longer (so you can push ahead with more delicacy, opportunity, and purpose). It just takes around five minutes, yet on the off chance that you sit, focus, and do it with uprightness it can truly assist you with returning to doing what you do.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Step 1. Find where that spot is in your body.In my case, it was directly in the center of my stomach. Along these lines, I carried my consideration regarding that sensation and location.Step 4. Give it a visual. Would you be able to portray it as a color? What's generally simple to depict is a shading and use it for representation. You should have the option to envision this inclination y ou characterized in Step 3. For some, it's most straightforward to portray it as a shading. Simply keep that feeling in your psyche and express whatever first goes to your head. Is dread a dark blue? Is nervousness an unobtrusive purple? It will be distinctive for everybody and each sensation, however on the off chance that you delay and learn about it â€" you can think about a shading that speaks to this feeling and feeling. In my case, it was blue. That substantial, transmitting feeling in my stomach resembled a profound, fluffy blue simply sitting there.Step 5. Discharge it. Time to let it go.Visualize the intensity of the psyche pushing that characterized groping and out of the body. When you've named your inclination, found it in your body, and marked it with depiction/shading, you're prepared to release it to discharge it.Take one all the more full breath and afterward truly picture pushing that feeling/shading out of your body. Do you feel it sneaking up your chest and off of your mind like a fog or cloud? Do you feel it pushing out of your feet and fingertips?Everyone will encounter this in an unexpected way. Choosing the Best ATS Keywords Is Your Resume Scannable

Choosing the Best ATS Keywords Is Your Resume Scannable When you write a resume today, you have to make sure it can be read by two different audiences: the traditional human eye and an automated tracking system (ATS). Human resource professionals and executive recruiters use this scanning technology to scan and store a high volume of resumes based on industry- and functional-specific keywords. The system then produces a short list of viable candidates. Here are my top three tips for choosing and formatting these keywords effectively for an ATS-friendly resume. Brainstorming your resume keywords In helping my clients understand and make use of keywords, I like to play a brainstorming game. I say, Imagine your resume is hidden in my computer. Ive scanned it. What buzzwords would I have to type in order for your resume to come out on top? This really gets them thinking. Try it for yourself! Researching your resume keywords There are many places where you can source keywords. The first and most important is the job posting. You want to be very deliberate about using the same specific terms the employer has incorporated in the job notice. Use the free site TagCrowd to see which keywords are used most often in the posting. Do a Google search for your job title or function, and check the National Occupation Code (NOC) (youll find sample job titles, as well as lists of duties). Of course, do a Google search. Keyword research is another great reason to engage a resume writer who will be acutely aware of the hottest buzzwords in your industry (at least they should be). Placing your resume keywords A properly formatted resume should include a list of keywords near the top of the page. You could format this as a simple table with a heading such as, Core business competencies. See these sample resumes that include effective keyword lists. Use two or three columns, with the most relevant phrases at the top of the left column. Separate soft skills from hard skills that way the machine can pick them up faster because theyre all grouped together. Have no more than 18 keywords total (i.e., three columns of six). Also use the keywords three or four times throughout the body of the resume, e.g., in your professional experience section and in your STAR stories (Situation, Task, Action, Result). You never know if your resume will be read by a human, machine or both. Without the right keywords, youre toast either way. If its fed through ATS and you dont have keywords, youre likely gone, even though you may be the perfect candidate. Humans need to see the keywords as well, so they recognize your potential. It would be very sad to miss out on an opportunity just because your resume is missing the right keywords. Find yours now by looking on the right-hand side of this page for Do You Know Your Keywords? and download my free guide to resume keywords.
